An old east-end Hamilton school could be changed to an Indigenous housing and friendship centre by two local organizations.
City council has backed the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre and Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services to convert the former King George Elementary School site at 77 Gage Avenue North.
Yesterday ECS Cmtee supported my motion to work in partnership with HRIC/OAHS to transform the former King George School into a first-of-its-kind urban indigenous housing & friendship hub in #HamOnt. I look forward to walking this path together. #LandBack https://t.co/5LwGgfdhIc

The two organizations hope to acquire the former school property from the city to create a hub that addresses Indigenous homelessness through culturally relevant services.
Executive director of the centre Aubrey Davis told the city council that the site by Tim Horton’s Field would be the perfect location in Ward 3 to offer such support with there being a higher poverty rate and percentage of residents who identify as Indigenous.
The two organizations are looking to work with planners and architects that can help with the vision of the more than a century old school building.
It was originally planned that the city would convert the King George Elementary School into a mini library and centre for early years services, but the funding did not line up.
