The Canadian Football League commissioner Randy Ambroise released a statement earlier this week that announces the plans for the league to return in 2021.
The regular season start date has been moved to kick-off on August 5th with the rescheduled Grey Cup shifted to December 12th in Hamilton.
BREAKING: The CFL regular season has a revised target start date of August 5th and the #GreyCup has been re-scheduled to December 12th in Hamilton, Ontario
— CFL (@CFL) April 21, 2021
As of right now, these are “target dates” with the commissioner admitting that the schedule is subject to change due to COVID-19.
The original 2021 season was scheduled to start in June but was rescheduled due to third wave infections taking hold of some provinces.
The CFL is greatly dependent on ticket sale revenue, says the statement. And the league is willing to get creative in order to get fans into the stands such as focusing on playing in regions that are as heavily impacted by the virus.
“Everyone who loves the CFL can help us and their communities. Please, when it is your turn, get vaccinated. And please follow your local public health guidelines on measures including wearing a mask and social distancing,” says Ambroise in the statement.
The Grey Cup is scheduled to be played in Hamilton to cap off the 2021 season on December 12th.
