Hamilton tests new ‘simple seating’ at bus stops

The City of Hamilton is testing a new form of ‘simple seating’ for use by riders waiting at Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) bus stops.

The economical, minimalistic design features two small seats attached to either side of an existing bus stop pole, with handles above each seat to help individuals sit and stand. It’s designed for local bus stops where space may be more constrained.

Images of the prototype were shared to Twitter by Jason Thorne, Hamilton’s head of city planning, transportation planning, and economic development.

It is located at a bus stop on Upper James near Rymal Road along the A-Line Express bus route, and locals are also invited to provide feedback to Thorne via Twitter or directly to the HSR about the design.

Sure, the side-by-side seating may not be super conducive to the era of physical distancing. That said, with some tweaks and refinement, this new form of simple seating could become a mainstay of HSR bus routes in the future.

What do you think of the design, Hamilton? Let us know in the comments!
