Here’s how Hamilton is impacted by Ontario’s new COVID-19 restrictions

On Friday afternoon, the Ontario government announced even more restrictions on top of the existing provincial stay-at-home orders, and the City of Hamilton has released a statement explaining how the city is affected by the new measures.

Premier Doug Ford announced that the stay-at-home orders, which were previously to be in place for one month, have been extended another two weeks to a total of 6 weeks.

“The Stay-at-Home Order is expected to last until at least May 20th, 2021,” reads a release from the city.

“Under the Order, residents must remain at home at all times, with exceptions for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work. Businesses across the province must ensure that any employee who can work from home, does work from home.”

The release goes on to explain that, as of Saturday, April 17th at 12:01 am, all outdoor social gatherings and organized events in the city are prohibited, except with those in your immediate household.

Additionally, all non-essential construction is shuttered, outdoor recreational amenities such as playgrounds and golf courses are closed, and capacity in all essential retail stores where in-person shopping is still permitted has been reduced to a maximum of 25 per cent.

For Hamilton, this means the city will be closing all sets of escarpment stairs, all municipal playgrounds, and all municipal park amenities including soccer fields, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, and skateboard parks.

On top of that, the city’s Chedoke Golf Course and King’s Forest Golf Course will be closed for play.

Controversially, the city has also authorized local police and provincial offence officers to stop any individual in person or in a vehicle and require them to identify their reason for not being at their residence and provide their home address. However, the Hamilton Police have released a statement explaining that they will not be performing these checks.
