Ontario adds further restrictions amid COVID-19 stay at home orders

The Ontario government has just announced further restrictions and measures on top of the current stay-at-home orders.

Premier Doug Ford made an announcement from Queen’s Park on Friday that the province-wide stay-at-home orders will be extended for an additional two weeks until a least May 20th, to a total of 6 weeks.

The province is limiting all outdoor gatherings to those within the same household only; closing all non-essential construction; and closing outdoor recreation facilities such as golf, soccer, and playgrounds

Additionally, they will be reducing capacity in essential big box retail stores to 25 per cent; limiting places of worship to 10 people maximum indoors; and implementing checkpoints at all interprovincial borders. Travel to Ontario from Manitoba and Quebec has been restricted, save for essential reasons.

Police services in Ontario have also now been authorized to require individuals out in public to provide their purpose for not being at home, and to provide their home address. They will also now be authorized to stop a vehicle to inquire about an individual’s reason for being outside of their home residence.

There was no word in response to the continued, impassioned push from countless Ontarians to enact paid sick days or enact greater safety supports for essential workers

The announcements come on the same day that Ontario hit an all-time high for new confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 4,812 new cases reported in a single day amid a continued rise in COVID-19 variants of concern.

More to come.
