Ontario schools will remain closed indefinitely after spring break

Students in elementary and secondary schools across Ontario will remain at home much longer than expected, as the Ford government has just announced the closure of all schools for in-person learning following the current April break.

As the April break ends, all students in Hamilton’s school boards will remain home for an indefinite period of time and carry out all classes through virtual learning instead.

A potential date for the return to in-person learning has not yet been announced.

It’s a measure intended to help mitigate further spread of COVID-19 and its more infectious and deadly variants in schools following the week-long break, which itself was already pushed from March to April this year.

“This was not a decision we made lightly, as we know how critical schools are to Ontario students,” said Ontario’s education minister Stephen Lecce.

“Our priority has always been to keep schools open, however sharply rising community transmission can put our schools and Ontario families at risk.”

Despite the Ford government’s continued insistence that schools are a safe environment for in-person learning amid the pandemic, cases of the virus have nonetheless been confirmed on a concerning, consistent basis.

In fact, over 30 new COVID-19 cases in Hamilton schools were reported over this past weekend, and 11 schools in the Hamilton area are currently listed on the city website for being in active COVID-19 outbreak.
