COVID-19 outbreak grows to 91 cases at Rebecca Towers in Hamilton

A residential apartment building has quickly become the site of one of Hamilton’s largest active outbreaks of COVID-19.

Rebecca Towers – the first Hamilton apartment building to experience a COVID-19 outbreak – has climbed to a total of 91 known active cases of the virus, with 88 of those cases being residents and the other 3 being staff.

23 of those cases were confirmed over this past weekend alone, with confirmed cases including the B.1.1.7 variant originally discovered in the United Kingdom. One death has been linked to the outbreak so far.

This past week, public health began doing door-to-door COVID-19 testing onsite, and has also been working with Medallion – the company that owns the apartment building – to help ensure the outbreak is managed.

Tenants at Rebecca Towers have been loudly calling for the city to set up a mobile vaccination clinic at the apartment building; an urgent cry for help among a community of residents left vulnerable to this rapidly spreading outbreak.

The building’s tenant committee has issued a list of demands to Medallion as landlord, including returning both building elevators to functional use as soon as possible, opening the hallway windows that are currently screwed shut to improve ventilation, ensuring all Medallion staff are wearing masks and obeying COVID-19 protocols, and hiring a security guard to enforce limits on the number of people in an elevator at once.

The outbreak was officially declared at the apartment building, located at 235 Rebecca Street, on May 3rd. It is one of 42 active COVID-19 outbreaks in Hamilton right now.
