Hamilton confirms first case of bat rabies in 2021

Hamilton public health has confirmed its first known instance of a bat testing positive for rabies for 2021.

This is the first time a rabid bat has been found in the city in nearly two years, the last being an instance in July of 2019.

Unfortunately, the rabid bat came into contact with a Hamilton resident, who was bitten by the infected bat and is now being treated by healthcare providers.

The city is urging residents to be mindful and avoid bats as well as other animals that can carry rabies including skunks, raccoons, foxes, and some stray cats and dogs.

“Rabies is a fatal virus that affects mammals, including humans, and is most commonly spread by wild animals like raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats,” reads a release from the city.

“Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually through a bite. However, saliva can also enter the body through scratches, open wounds or mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes.”

According to officials, Hamilton currently has an outbreak of rabies, with 330 animals in the city – mostly raccoons and skunks – testing positive since December 2015.
