Hamilton is now a hotspot for the Delta variant of COVID-19

Hamilton has been freshly added to the list of Ontario’s public health units that are hotspots for the more infectious Delta variant of COVID-19.

The Delta variant, known formally as B.1617.2 and first discovered in India late last year, has shown to be more transmissible than other variants of COVID-19, with the potential of causing more severe disease as well.

It’s the variant that has rapidly spread through places like the United Kingdom, where it is now the dominant strain of COVID-19.

However, Hamilton being added to Ontario’s list of Delta hotspots also means eligible residents will now be able to schedule their second doses of the COVID-19 vaccines much sooner than previously announced.

As of Monday, June 21st at 8 am, Hamilton residents who received their first dose of an mRNA vaccine – Pfizer or Moderna – on or before May 9th will be eligible to schedule or reschedule their second doses.

Then, on Wednesday, June 23rd at 8 am, Hamilton residents who received their first mRNA dose on or before May 30th will also be eligible to reschedule their second dose appointments.

This all comes ahead of the gates being flung open on Monday, June 28th for second dose bookings, which will allow all Ontarians with one dose of vaccine to bump up their second appointments.

Appointments for second doses can be booked or rescheduled through Ontario’s online booking portal, or by phoning Hamilton’s COVID-19 hotline at 905-974-9848, option 7.
