Hamilton public school board requesting to open for last week of school

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is asking the province if schools and in-person classes can resume for the final week before summer break.

At a board meeting earlier this week, chair Dawn Danko brought the idea forward in order to provide an opportunity for students to socialize to end one of the most turbulent school years in recent memory.

Director of Education Manny Figueiredo banked up Danko’s claim clarifying that the return to school would not be for academic pursuits, but more for the mental health of students who have been separated from their peers during the most recent school closure.

They also came to the conclusion that it would provide a chance for staff and students to gather items and properly clean up their belongings left in their classrooms.

Last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed that schools would remain online for the rest of the 2020/21 school year. This decision was despite many public health units stating schools could and should reopen throughout June.

HWDSB is planning to write a letter to the provincial government to formerly request that students be allowed back in class for a few days at the end of June.
