Toronto city council voted 17-7 to remove and rename Dundas Street and other public amenities bearing that name.
The street is named after Henry Dundas who played a key role in delaying the end of the British empire’s transatlantic slave trade.

A petition to rename the street surfaced in June 2020 following global discussions and protests against anti-Black racism after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Dundas Street stretches through Toronto and reaches out to some suburbs in the GTA including Hamilton.
Dundas Street is one of the main roads that goes through Waterdown and Flamborough. Also, a famous community in Hamilton is also named Dundas after the Scottish politician.
In response to the petition, the City of Toronto approved the renaming of the street last week based on a city staff report requesting the change.
It’s estimated that renaming the street and other civic amenities could cost close to $6 million.
After public input, the renaming will take place in April 2022 including popular landmarks such as Yonge-Dundas Square and Dundas subway station.
