Hamilton urges higher vaccination as move beyond Stage Three approaches

Hamilton officials and public health are urging locals who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 yet to get their shots as soon as possible; especially as a move out of Stage Three swiftly approaches.

The Mayors and Chairs from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area met to discuss how all of the neighbouring municipalities are doing with dropping COVID-19 case counts and rates of vaccination.

Now, they’re pushing city residents to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible, both to avoid spread of the more contagious Delta variant and to do our best to avoid the threat of a fourth pandemic wave; especially as a return to school is coming in a matter of weeks.

To move out of Stage Three, the province of Ontario needs to hit 80 per cent of the over-12 population with at least one vaccine dose, and at least 75 per cent with both doses, with no public health unit in the province having less than 70 per cent of their eligible population fully vaccinated.

“We continue to see an uptake in COVID-19 vaccinations in our community and must continue to encourage everyone to get their first and second dose of the vaccine as soon as they are eligible,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“Walk-in appointments have made access to the vaccine even more seamless. It is encouraging to see the positive impact, both on our local businesses and in the lives of residents, as we all work together to beat this virus.”

As of the morning of Friday, July 30th, 76.2 per cent of eligible Hamiltonians 12 and up have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with 64.5 per cent of that eligible population now fully vaccinated.

Another 5.5 per cent of that eligible population must be fully vaccinated in order to move past Stage Three and further relax restrictions.
