Pier 4 beach has been temporarily closed due to the algae, with swimmers advised to stay out of the water and avoid any general activities that involve touching or entering the water. Fish caught in that area should also not be consumed.
“Blue green algae blooms can happen in Hamilton Harbour in the summer and are typically seen as bright green surface scums,” reads a warning from the city.
“Blue green algae can make toxins that are harmful if swallowed or come in contact with skin.”
Exposure to this algae can cause a number of symptoms including headaches, fever, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, skin rashes, and mucous membrane irritation.
Anyone who has been in the water at Pier 4 recently and may be experiencing any of these symptoms is advised to contact their physician.
The city adds that Hamilton’s drinking water supply is not affected by the situation.
