Hamilton is under heat warning until the middle of the week

Stay cool, Hamilton: the city has extended its heat warning, with considerably hot weather expected for today and likely holding into the middle of this week.

Hamilton’s Medical Officer of Health initiated the warning beginning today, Monday August 23rd, which will stay in effect until a cancellation notice is sent.

The city is expecting daytime highs of 30 to 32 degrees Celsius, with humidex values of 37 to 40 degrees Celsius. Nighttime minimum temperatures aren’t expected to dip much lower than 21 degrees Celsius.

In response to the heatwave, the city is opening some select “cool places” where residents in need of a place to stay safe and beat the heat can go to cool off. A list of these places is available on the city website.

Locals are also advised to monitor for signs of heat exhaustion, which include heavy sweating, weakness, clammy skin, fainting, and vomiting. Those experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.

To help avoid the worst of the heat, Hamilton advises residents to hydrate consistently, stay in an air-conditioned space if possible, keep living spaces cool by closing blinds and using fans, and to limit physical activity; particularly outdoors.
