Ontario’s proof of vaccination policy launches today

Heads up: Ontario’s new proof of vaccination policy goes into effect starting today – Wednesday, September 22nd – in a variety of non-essential settings.

Under this policy, Ontarians will be required to show proof of full immunization against COVID-19 with a Health Canada-approved vaccine in order to access certain settings such as indoor dining, movie theatres, meeting and event spaces, indoor sporting venues, indoor concert venues, fitness centres, nightclubs, casinos, racing venues, strip clubs, and more.

Ahead of the province rolling out a more official, enhanced form of vaccine certificate, residents can simply show a hard copy or email copy of their original vaccine receipts alongside a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or health card, in order to access these settings.

The provincial mandate does not apply to essential settings such as grocery stores, pharmacies, and medical clinics.

It also doesn’t apply to most outdoor settings where COVID-19 transmission is known to be lower, like patio dining or outdoor sports venues; however, some of these individual venues may choose to require proof of vaccination regardless, as venues like Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton have already done.

Proof of vaccination policies are another health & safety measure to help mitigate the continued spread of COVID-19 in the population, particularly with the prominence of the more infectious Delta variant.

The existing Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccines are proven to be safe and effective, providing good protection against any infection and even better protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death in the event of a breakthrough infection.
