Hamilton Police launch a safe buy-and-sell exchange zone

If you’ve ever bought or sold anything on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace and felt a little iffy about meeting up with the other person to finish the transaction, a new initiative in Hamilton is helping to make the process feel a whole lot safer.

Hamilton Police have launched a brand new Buy and Sell Exchange Zone, positioned outside of the police service’s Mountain Station at 400 Rymal Road East and well-lit for even nighttime transactions.

The exchange zone, which launched officially on October 6th, allows buyers and sellers to access two designated parking spaces in front of the police station 24/7 to exchange items and complete transactions safely.

“Meeting an unknown buyer or seller in person has risks,” says Inspector Frank Miscione of the Hamilton Police’s Community Mobilization Division. “Our new Buy and Sell Exchange Zone offers a safer place for individuals to meet and exchange items.”

Additionally, the Hamilton Police has created a list of recommendations for safer in-person transactions, including conducting them during daylight hours; meeting in a busy public space; bringing a friend or family member along; and retaining all emails, texts, or voicemails related to the transaction.
