Ontario’s minimum wage has officially increased

Ontario workers are about to see a tiny bump in their hourly pay, as the province’s minimum wage increase is now officially in effect.

But don’t get too excited: the increase truly is tiny, going up only by 10 cents and bringing Ontario’s minimum wage from $14.25 per hour to $14.35 per hour as of October 1st, 2021.

For minimum wage employees working a full-time, 8-hour day, the change only represents an increase of 80 cents of pay extra per working day; not exactly a jump to get excited about.

The last increase to Ontario’s minimum wage occurred on October 1st of 2020, where it saw an increase of 25 cents and jumped from $14 per hour to $14.25 per hour.

This year, there’s also a 10 cent increase to minimum wage for students under the age of 18, which has gone up to $13.50; and the same increase for workers who serve alcohol and receive tips, which has gone up to $12.55.

The small increase has drawn plenty of criticism from Ontarians, who feel that a mere 10 cent raise in hourly minimum wage is grossly insufficient; especially when compared to the rapidly rising cost of living in the province.
