A new community fridge has opened on Locke Street

In an effort to help combat food insecurity, Hamilton has been seeing a number of new community fridges pop up in neighbourhoods across the city.

Now, a new community fridge has popped up along Locke Street as part of the Kirkendall neighbourhood, providing a safe space for residents experiencing food insecurity to access supplies like fresh produce, canned goods, and more.

The Locke Street Community Fridge is operated by Blessings Church at the corner of Locke Street and Stanley Avenue, located inside a small purpose-built shed beside the church and open 24/7 for residents to take food as needed as well as donate it.

While the fridge does not accept donations like home-cooked food, raw meat, or expired items, they will gladly accept donations of fresh or frozen produce, breads, dairy products, eggs, commercially produced frozen meals, canned goods, grab and go snacks, baby formula, and menstrual products.

Though independently operated by Blessings Church, the fridge joins a network of others operated by Community Fridges HamOnt city-wide in neighbourhoods like Gilkson, Crown Point, and Beasley. There will almost certainly be more to come in hopes of covering as many neighbourhoods as possible.

For more information about the Locke Street Community Fridge, visit their website or check them out on Instagram.
