HSR buses are now free for children ages 6-12 until April 2023

Are you a Hamilton resident between the ages of 6 and 12?

If so, you’re probably not reading this; but an adult in your life almost certainly is, so they’ll be able to pass on the news that you get to ride the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) for free between now and April 2023.

It’s part of a pilot project launched by the city and the HSR, which will allow children aged 6-12 to ride a city bus for free using a PRESTO Card.

The pilot officially kicked off on November 1st, and will be in place through all of 2022 and into 2023, ending formally in the spring of that year.

Eligible youth can simply tap a PRESTO Card when boarding an HSR vehicle to ride the bus for free; an especially great money-saving initiative for young families travelling together in a group.

As usual, children aged 5 and under will still be able to ride the HSR for free as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult.

A key purpose of the pilot project is to aid in the HSR’s ridership recovery efforts, which include fare incentives intended to help the HSR ensure public transit remains affordable despite a considerable dip in ridership brought on by the pandemic.
