A library for wheelchairs and other assistive devices is opening in Hamilton

A unique and deeply important new library is getting ready to open its doors here in Hamilton; but it’s not the kind you can borrow books from.

This new library will loan out wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, canes, and other crucial assistive devices for those in need in our community.

A project by the Disability Justice Network of Ontario, the Assistive Devices Library is set to launch early in 2022 at 423 King Street East, the current home of the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion.

Currently, the library is collecting donations of assistive devices that will be loaned out through the library for locals to hold onto for up to six weeks, or even longer with an extension.

Devices being accepted include wheelchairs, scooters, prosthetics, canes, white canes, glucose monitors, screen readers, ankle braces & boots, crutches, and walkers.

A community drop-off date for devices occurred in mid-December, with undoubtedly more chances to donate in the near future.

A firm launch date has yet to be announced, but follow the Disability Justice Network of Ontario on social media to stay updated!
