Canada officially bans unvaccinated travellers from planes and trains

As of this past Tuesday, November 30th, all Canadian travellers ages 12 and up on planes and trains must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Through the previous month, negative molecular COVID-19 tests were permitted in lieu of proof of vaccination.

However, that grace period has ended, and all travellers who wish to board a plane or train in Canada must now be able to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

A few exemptions will apply, including valid medical exemptions; but most of those exempt will still need to provide a negative COVID-19 test in order to travel.

The new requirement comes into effect as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 – labelled a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization – begins to pop up in confirmed cases in Canada.

Science is still studying the Omicron variant and attempting to determine its transmissibility, its potential to evade or weaken certain public health measures, and whether or not it has the potential to cause more severe disease.

Existing COVID-19 health and safety measures, like mandatory masks and health screenings, will still be in effect when travelling.
