Arrest made, outdoor heaters recovered for Hamilton’s Electric Diner

A tough week for one of Hamilton’s small businesses has started to look up.

Electric Diner – a popular ‘80s-style diner in Hess Village – was hit hard when the four outdoor heaters that made their patio functional during COVID-19 restrictions were stolen overnight on Tuesday.

It was a big blow for the beloved diner, with each heater worth thousands of dollars and not enough funds on hand to readily replace them and keep their outdoor patio going in the winter weather.

Hearteningly, the local community was quick to respond, with other local spots like Collective Arts Brewing loaning some heaters to Electric Diner in the interim and another Hess spot – café and barbershop Andiamo – spearheading a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for Electric Diner to rapidly replace the crucial equipment, which met its goal within a day.

But it turns out Electric Diner won’t need to replace its heaters after all, as the restaurant has revealed that – with the help of an Instagram follower – they were able to track down the suspect and retrieve their original heaters last night, with two arrests made.

“We can’t believe how Hamiltonians, our friends and family were able to pull together a solution so quickly in order to save our business and our staff’s jobs,” wrote Electric Diner on social media.

“We’re working on getting these heaters back to functioning order, and some up with a secure solution moving forward, but in the meantime, we’ve connected with GoFundMe and will be returning all donations back to each donor.”

It’s a sweetly happy ending to an infuriating saga; an ending that can be attributed to the collective power of Hamilton’s community.
