Hamilton requiring all city employees to be vaccinated by May 31st

The City of Hamilton has introduced a new requirement for all city employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical exemption by May 31st, 2022.

City council voted to amend the existing COVID-19 vaccination policy at a meeting on Wednesday, changing key parts of the policy originally established in late August of 2021.

Notably, the amended policy clarifies that ‘fully vaccinated’ currently means two doses, not including booster shots as of yet.

Additionally, those who are not fully vaccinated or do not disclose their status by May 31st will be terminated. Previously, unvaccinated city employees or those who didn’t want to disclose their status were instead able to undergo regular COVID-19 testing instead.

Council voted 12-2 in favour of the amended vaccination policy, which affects all city employees including full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary, volunteer, casual, members of council, members of council-appointed committees, and students.

“We know that the COVID-19 vaccine and booster work to protect people from becoming infected with the virus, acquiring more serious infections and in the end save lives,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“We are committed to taking all the necessary steps to ensure City of Hamilton work spaces are as safe as possible. I encourage all our employees who are not yet vaccinated to do so as soon as possible. Please do the right thing now and get vaccinated. It will help protect you, your coworkers and your loved ones.”

According to a release from the city, 93 per cent of city employees have provided proof of full vaccination to date.
