A Day in the Sun brings unique picnic experiences to Hamilton

With the snowy weather staved off for now (knock on wood) and sunnier days ahead, Hamilton is going to be filled with outdoor activities to enjoy throughout the spring and summer.

But on top of hitting a bunch of patios to soak up the summer days, locals are undoubtedly going to return to simple pleasures of a picnic in the park; a trend that became even more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as a means of safely gathering outdoors.

In fact, it’s the pandemic that led Hamilton resident and entrepreneur Sofia Ramírez to launch A Day in the Sun Posh Picnic Co: a company that kicks the picnic experience up a notch with attractive, thoughtful design elements.

Ramírez says she was inspired to create the business while trying to make a picnic she hosted for her friends a little extra special during the isolation and challenges brought on by COVID-19.

“During the first wave of the pandemic when we were allowed small outdoor gatherings only, I planned a picnic for myself and some friends to get us together and out of the house,” she explains.

“I was always the type of person who loved hosting and gathering with friends and family and  when it wasn’t allowed anymore, I was lost, much like many other people who couldn’t see their loved ones.”

After that unexpectedly fateful picnic, Ramírez got to work on a concept and business plan for A Day in the Sun, crafting unique and memorable picnic experiences out of a handful of design inspirations.

At a base level, A Day in the Sun’s picnics are designed and set up for 2-4 people and decked out with fully decorated tables, throw pillows and cushions, attractive blankets and rugs, macramé décor, candles and lanterns, dried floral arrangements, sparkling or still drinking water, and more.

Set-up, clean-up, and tear-down are also covered by Ramírez and her team, meaning that those who show up for the picnic simply get to relax, enjoy, and depart at the end of their allotted 2-hour timeframe.

No two picnics are alike, either; even though Ramírez works with a select few design aesthetics, she’s always reshaping the elements to suit the unique outdoor spaces for each picnic, and offers a wide selection of add-ons from charcuterie boards to tents to Moroccan tea sets; all things that make this picnic company stand out.

All of our design elements are as unique as the people who book them,” says Ramírez. “We also work directly with the clients to bring their own visions to life and we have a ton of fun doing it.”

Though only in operation for the past couple of years, A Day in the Sun has already been a hit in the Hamilton area, setting up memorable, elevated picnic experiences in pandemic-friendly outdoor settings for everything from personal get-togethers to larger corporate clients.

Indeed, Ramírez’s creative business plan was the perfect kind of entrepreneurial venture for a pandemic; as outdoor gatherings continue to be the safest way for groups to gather socially, having a posh picnic service like A Day in the Sun had Ramírez hitting the ground running, with strong demand right out of the gate.

I immediately became busier than I could ever have imagined, to the point of having to hire someone to help me keep up with the demands,” she says. “It was a dream come true, actually.”

Smartly recognizing the seasonal limitations of A Day in the Sun’s picnic services, Ramírez treats her company as a full-on lifestyle brand, offering other services year-round including the newly launched Posh Box: a curated selection of goods by local makers that fit in with Ramírez’s overarching ‘posh’ theme.

But with sunny summer days upon us, it won’t be surprising to see Ramírez and her team busy as ever with A Day in the Sun all across the GTA as well as right here in Hamilton: the community she’s proud to call her lifelong home.

I was born and raised in Hamilton and have watched this city become a mecca for arts and entertainment, with some of the coolest, poshest places to dine,” she says.

“I am very lucky to have been able to connect with many influencers in the community who have really helped me and my brand become successful.”
