Hamilton’s Tivoli Theatre to be restored by new buyers

An icon of Hamilton’s downtown core, the historic, once-vibrant Tivoli Theatre has sat heartbreakingly unoccupied for nearly 20 years along James Street North.

However, the building as well as the Centre Point Plaza beside it have been newly acquired by Aventus Developments in collaboration with Burlington-based Society Developments, with plans to redevelop and revitalize the historic site.

A gorgeous performing arts space that has housed countless plays, musicals, movies, vaudeville, concerts, and cultural events over the past century, The Tivoli was first built in 1875 as a carriage factory before being changed into a theatre venue  after the factory’s closure in 1908.

Falling into considerable structural issues in more recent years, the Tivoli was later sold to the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble for just two dollars, but the building has sat empty and decaying ever since despite numerous potential buyers trying to get their hands on The Tivoli in subsequent years.

It wasn’t until 2014 that the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble’s CEO, Bella Diamante, sold the Tivoli to Diamante Holdings – her husband’s development group – for $900,000, with a plan to erect a condo building on the site that never came to fruition.

Though precise plans for the theatre and plaza have yet to be determined, new buyers Aventus and Society Developments are currently working with heritage architects to assess the current state of the theatre before making concrete plans on steps forward.
