Gerry’s Roofing brings decades of honest hard work to Hamilton

You’d be hard-pressed to find a roofing company in Hamilton with more time-honoured industry expertise or a stronger reputation than Gerry’s Roofing & Siding.
Founded by Gerry St. Germain over 40 years ago, the company is now owned by husband-and-wife team Joel and Karena Knight who – with their own years of experience in the construction industry – continue Gerry’s legacy by maintaining the business as one of the most reliable roofers servicing Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Mississauga.
“I started my construction career soon after on a shingling crew when I was 19, and the foreman who taught me always would say, ‘first you get good, then you can get fast,’” says Joel, who first moved to Hamilton back in 2003 while he was in high school.
Roofing work continued to be a part of Joel’s life while attending Redeemer University, followed by a brief 3-year pivot into financial services that never quite felt like the right fit: “A suit & tie was not for me.”
Joel didn’t waste time on his plans to trade in his office duds for a toolbelt, starting his journey returning to a full-time life in the construction industry by interviewing with numerous companies in the city; including Gerry’s Roofing, who offered Joel a job as an estimator and salesman back in 2010.
He held that position with Gerry’s Roofing for a full decade and gradually learned even more sides of the trade, gaining valuable experience and knowledge in everything from windows to siding, from eavestroughs to skylights.
Becoming so deeply integrated into Gerry’s Roofing eventually resulted in Joel taking the reins from Gerry himself upon his retirement in 2020, leading the charge to this day alongside wife Karena who co-owns the company and serves as its office manager following her 15-year career as a medical secretary at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
Today under this newer co-ownership, Gerry’s Roofing remains one of the area’s best for a variety of exterior household jobs and repairs that go well beyond just roofing services, including doors and windows, soffit work, eavestroughs, fascia, and more; all led by what Joel says are the company’s enduring philosophies.
“We operate on the principles of honesty, integrity, and trust, and unfortunately in today’s society, that is quite rare for a construction company,” he explains.
“We know that if we do what we say we are going to do, when we say we are going to do it, we will be in business for many years to come. Our customers can rest assure that their home is in great hands, and we will be there in the future should any issues arise.”
That commitment has kept Gerry’s Roofing busy year after year with first-time clients and loyal customers alike in the Hamilton area and well beyond, and Joel is quick to express how much pride he has in getting to do this work in a city he has called home for almost 20 years.
“As a Hamiltonian, it is awesome to see our make-over projects all over the city, and to be such an important part of the Hamilton landscape,” he says. “Our 3 kids are constantly rolling their eyes when we drive around town as dad points out projects that we have installed as we pass by houses.”
In speaking with Joel, it’s abundantly clear how seriously he and his team take their work at Gerry’s Roofing – from their diverse and adaptable contract jobs to their charity efforts, like their regular donations to Indwell Ministries in support of low-income families – and how important it is that the company continues to be one that Hamiltonians trust.
