Hamilton’s Pier 4 beach closed due to blue-green algae

City of Hamilton Public Health has ordered the temporary closure of the public beach at Pier 4 Park due to the presence of toxin-producing blue-green algae in the water.

Potential health risks are associated with blue-green algae, and public health advises locals to avoid contact with it for their own safety.

If contact is made, locals are advised to wash themselves off with clean water as soon as possible using the facilities for hand-washing or rinsing off available at Pier 4.

Most of the health risks from blue-green algae come from drinking and ingesting the water, with potential symptoms including skin irritation, rashes, a sore throat, nausea and vomiting, fever, headache, and diarrhea.

The blue-green algae is expected to subside as the weather cools, and public health emphasizes that this does not impact the safety of Hamilton’s drinking water.
