Hamilton opens COVID-19 booster doses to children aged 5 to 11

The City of Hamilton Public Health has opened up third booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to residents ages 5 to 11.

This move, effective as of September 1st, has been prompted by a directive for the Ontario government and will be a key protective measure against COVID-19 as youth return to school in-person this month.

Parents and caregivers of eligible children ages 5 to 11 are now able to book a booster appointment at a city-run clinic through Hamilton’s online booking tool here, or by calling the city’s COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 905-974-9848, option 7.

Appointments can also be booked through local pharmacies such as Shopper Drug Mart, Rexall, or select independent pharmacies.

“With Hamilton students heading back to class and taking part in more indoor activities come the Fall, we’re encouraging all Hamilton families to get vaccinated and stay up-to-date with their vaccinations with all the doses recommended for them, as an important part of their back-to-school planning,” said Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health.

“Getting vaccinated, including a booster dose when recommended, remains the most important way to protect against COVID-19 and its health effects. While most children in this age group have relatively mild symptoms, some do experience severe illness, particularly those with underlying health conditions.”
