Ontario opens bivalent COVID-19 vaccine to residents 18+ this month

The Ontario government has announced that it will be opening eligibility for the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine dose to residents 18 and over this month.

The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, provided by Moderna and approved by Health Canada on September 1st, is one that targets both the original strain of COVID as well as the Omicron variant BA.1.

Public health will be releasing bivalent booster appointments gradually, starting with the most vulnerable populations.

As of today – Monday, September 12th – they are open to populations including individuals over 70; residents of long-term care homes; First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals and their housemates aged 18 and up; immunocompromised individuals aged 12 and up; health care workers aged 18 and up; and pregnant people aged 18 and up.

From there, all Ontario residents aged 18 and up will be eligible to receive a bivalent booster dose starting September 26th, provided their last dose of a COVID-19 vaccine was at least 6 months prior to the appointment date.

“With the start of the respiratory illness season, it is especially important to make sure people stay up to date with their vaccines,” said Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

“COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are the best tool to keep people healthy and out of hospitals, and to ensure Ontario’s economy stays open as kids go back to school and as the weather cools and people spend more time indoors.”

Appointments can be booked through Ontario’s online COVID-19 vaccine booking portal, or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900.
