East Hamilton Food Centre set to open this year

Over the last few weeks, two units at Greenhill Plaza have been undergoing extensive transformations in order to become the East Hamilton Food Centre. The food centre, located at the corner of Greenhill and Quigley Road, has been greatly anticipated.

The East Hamilton Food Centre will run both as a food bank and as a kitchen centre. The food bank portion will open first with the kitchen being phased in later. St. Mathew’s House will operate the food bank while volunteers will oversee the food centre. The establishment will be modelled after Neighbour to Neighbour.

After the Stoney Creek Community Food Centre relocated to Highway 8, it’s been a priority for the East end to have access to new food centre. As soon as the facility opens, the East Hamilton Food Centre will begin to fulfill the area’s needs and bring an end to the “food drought” there.

Currently there is no set opening date for the facility, but it’s possible for the new food centre to open by the end of the summer.

Which other areas in the city are in need of a food bank? Let us know in the comments.
