Nique owners opening two new spots at James North and Barton

The team behind Nique Restaurant will be opening the doors to two new spots at the south-east corner of James Street North and Barton.

The first of which will be an Italian restaurant known as Martello (Italian for ‘hammer’) that boasts 5,000 square feet with the aim of becoming Hamilton’s “third place” — that is, somewhere to foster community and creative social interaction that’s separate from the home and workplace.

The menu is inspired by the simplicity and comfort of Italian home-cooking using fresh, local ingredients and ensuring that everything is made from scratch.

Included in the menu will be traditional style pizza made in a wood-fired oven, as well as an extensive list of hand-made pasta.

There will be three distinct areas in the restaurant, each with its own vibe: the cocktail bar, the dining room, and the courtyard.

The dining room features a tall, vaulted ceiling that was discovered upon removal of the drop ceiling. The team loved the newfound space so much that they went ahead and removed the entire ceiling to showcase the original, towering brick walls and to allow more natural light into the room.

This area will be known as “the cathedral”

The dining room continues to the back of the building, utilizing the exposed brick walls to create an intimate seating area.

As you wait for a table, guests will be directed to the adjacent bar area or courtyard to enjoy a drink and/or snack. While the bar will be cozy and decorated with ornate vintage finds, it’s the courtyard that really has our attention.

The courtyard will be lush with greenery and presented with a more industrial feel. A local artist will be hired to paint murals along the exterior walls of this tucked-away space.

Upon completion, I have a strong feeling that this will be a top spot for outdoor dining in Hamilton.

On the adjacent corner beside Steeltown Garage on Barton will be home to the team’s third business — The General.

The name is an old-timey nod to what a “general store” back in the day would typically carry such as fresh-cut meat and canned goods.

As such, The General aims to be a butchery as well as a purveyor of high-quality packaged goods along its store shelves.

Expect both of these spots to become open to the public before the year’s out.
