Hamilton’s widely loved Sensational Samosa set for long awaited grand-opening this weekend

The day has finally come. After years of growing anticipation, Hamilton’s beloved Sensational Samosa will finally be opening a storefront location in Downtown Dundas at 51 King Street West.

A long-time staple and fan-favourite at Hamilton Farmers’ Market, Sensational Samosa has steadfastly grown from a casual throw-in to Reuben Charles’ farmer’s market stall, into a main attraction that sells over 2,500 samosas per week, bringing in customers from all over Ontario.

Coming from humble beginnings, Sensational Samosa began decades ago with founder and patriarch Reuben Charles. Charles, who is originally from Pakistan, immigrated to Canada in 1964 after working as a registered nurse in the UK. He spent the next 15 years as a surgical nurse at Hamilton General Hospital and Henderson Hospital before deciding to begin a new chapter in 1980, when he and his wife Eliza, an immigrant from the Philippines, bought a farm in Caistor Centre. The next year, they sold the property and purchased a poultry farm in Flamborough, where they raised chickens with their daughter Lorelei and their son Joel.

They soon started growing vegetables and eventually Reuben began selling meat, veggies, and poultry at various farmers’ markets across the region until he was able to get a permanent stall in Hamilton in 1985. As the story goes, one day the Charles family decided to try putting out a basket of samosas with the rest of his goods and was pleased with how quickly they sold. Due to popular demand, they began making more samosas and offering mild, medium, and spicy options to cater to their customers’ diverse palettes. Unbeknownst to Reuben at the time, this little idea would eventually blossom into the regionally renowned samosa shop it is today.

Now that Reuben is older, the family business is mostly run by his daughter Lorelei and her husband Kevin while Reuben still cooks and manages the kitchen. As the business has grown, they have remained true to their ethos of health, quality, and fresh ingredients without artificial additives or preservatives. This commitment to doing things the right way and continuing to prepare food with the same care they would use in a home setting comes through in the richness and flavour of their food.

Sensational Samosa will offer 14 different kinds of gourmet baked samosas including meat, veggie, and vegan options. There will also be other savoury options available such as various pastries, vegan and meat lover curry, soups, salads, and much more.

Sensational Samosa’s doors officially open with a special grand opening event scheduled for Saturday the 21st from 11 am to 3 pm.
