Lick the Whisk has closed with new vegan spot ‘Sookham’ opening in its place

Shortly after the permanent closure of plant-based café Lotus & The Bee, Hamilton has lost yet another beloved vegan spot at the top of 2020.
Lick the Whisk, which was located on Barton Street near James North, was Hamilton’s only all-vegan bakery and sweet shop; a popular place for plant-based sugar fixes that even made our 2019 list of the top 10 vegan spots in the city.
At the end of December leading up to the holidays, Lick the Whisk posted to Instagram to announce that the café and bakery would be closed until further notice. No reason was given on social media, and there hasn’t been a follow-up post since.
Unceremoniously, it turns out Lick the Whisk has closed permanently, with the doors remaining shut since December 23rd, 2019.

While local vegans will likely lament the loss of the well-loved spot, there’s also an upside: with one vegan establishment closing, another is getting ready to open in the exact same place.
That would be Sookham, a forthcoming vegan restaurant set to serve up fusion dishes that are exclusively plant-based.
Sookham, which means ‘all happiness ‘ in Sanskrit, will feature a menu inspired by conscious eating and the ‘principles of Ayurveda’ (a Hindu system of medicine and wellness). On top of all dishes being vegan, Sookham also endeavours to offer food that is primarily organic, locally-sourced, and made fresh in-house.
According to Sookham’s owners, the restaurant will be “not just a place to eat, but an experience in itself,” promising a welcoming space for Hamiltonian vegans to find “lightness of being… through the art of conscious and mindful eating!”
While full details of the forthcoming restaurant are still to come, Sookham is also expected to open up shop in the former Lick the Whisk space as of March 2020. Keep your eyes peeled, Hamilton!
