Hamilton’s iconic Roma Bakery is reopening next week

If there’s a hole in your Hamiltonian heart that only a saucy slab pizza could fill, here’s some news that will make your day: Hamilton’s famed Roma Bakery is officially reopening next week.

The family-owned Barton Street bakery is known primarily for their iconic slab pizzas that have been a staple of local parties and picnics since 1952. Just as delicious hot or cold, toasted or soft, these versatile bread pizzas have become known – even well beyond city borders – as a quintessential piece of Hamilton’s food culture.

But Hamiltonians have been missing the taste of that pizza for over two months now, as Roma Bakery went on an indefinite hiatus starting on March 24th amid the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, effectively halting both sales at their bakery as well as distribution to local grocers.

“We are very sorry we are not going to be able to fill your bellies during the quarantine with Roma pizza and goodies,” read the bakery’s original announcement on social media.

However, in a happy surprise on Thursday, Roma Bakery took to social media again to inform the public that they would once again open their doors and resume pounding out those pizzas for the Hamilton masses – safely, of course.

“Although Ontario has a long way to go, our lives with social distancing has become the new normal,” said Roma Bakery’s new announcement. “With the correct parameters in place and with the public educated on how to social distance properly, we decided to re-open our doors as of ‪Tuesday, June 2nd.”

Now, Roma Bakery will be resuming their storefront operations with a limited number of 5 to 6 customers allowed in the store at one time. The bakery will also offer curbside pickup options, and will once again distribute those sweet, sweet slab pizzas to all of their usual retail partners in Hamilton and the surrounding area.

Not much is certain during this wild time; but I think it’s safe to say that on June 2nd, Hamilton is going to get a little tastier thanks to the return of the iconic Roma Bakery.
