Meanwhile Winebar on James North has closed its doors

As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to devastate the local economy, many of Hamilton’s restaurants and small businesses are fighting to keep their heads above water. As a result, one of the city’s newest wine bars has made the difficult decision to close up shop entirely.

That would be Meanwhile Winebar, a cozy and chic downtown space featuring a world class wine list and tantalizing menu of small bites. An offshoot of Corktown’s popular cafe Salty Espresso that opened just a few months ago, Meanwhile was already well on its way to establishing itself as a prime nightlife spot on James North.

Anyone who had the good fortune of experiencing Chef and Sommelier Kyle Paton’s thoughtful menu of artisanal cheeses, nuts, and elevated bar snacks paired with an exquisite selection of local and international wines knows just how singular Meanwhile Winebar was as a young fixture of Hamilton’s food & drink scene.

The wine bar originally adjusted to the new realities of COVID-19 by pivoting its business into selling gift certificates and opening an online wine shop, where locals could purchase bottles from Meanwhile’s selection to enjoy at home.

However, not long after that pivot, Meanwhile made an announcement on social media that they will not be reopening their James North and Barton space on the other side of emergency orders and closures.

“We are so grateful to have been part of such an amazing community here in Hamilton, and wish everyone all the best during these challenging times,” said Meanwhile Winebar in their post on Instagram. “Thank you all – our guests, our friends, our family, our staff, our partners – for the support, love, wonderful memories you provided.”

Meanwhile is not the first Hamilton spot to close its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it likely won’t be the last. Hamiltonians who have the means to do so are strongly encouraged to continue shopping local as much as possible to help keep the city’s struggling small businesses afloat during this tumultuous time.
