Atlantic Submarine closes after 40 years in Hamilton

Hamilton is seeing another particularly painful closure as a result of the pandemic, as a 40-year food fixture of the city’s east end has announced that it is permanently shutting its doors.

Atlantic Submarine, one of the city’s iconic spots for classic, simple submarine sandwiches in both hot and cold varieties, announced on their Facebook page on June 18th that the long-time lunchtime staple is permanently closing its 927 King Street East storefront.

“We would like to thank all of Hamilton for all of your love and support through 40 years of business,” said Atlantic Submarine’s ownership on social media. “We have decided to close our doors permanently due to COVID-19.”

Hamiltonians immediately flooded social media with heartbroken farewell messages and reminiscences; multiple comments even singled out Atlantic Submarine for its gyros.

“You had the best gyros. We would drive in from Cayuga just for them,” said one Facebook user.

“Best subs in Hamilton,” said another.

Atlantic Submarine isn’t the first local business to shutter due to COVID-19, and sadly, it likely won’t be the last.

No word yet, however, on if this closure will also apply to Atlantic Submarine’s second location over on John Street South.
