Here are five Dundas foodie gems you’ve gotta check out

We all know Hamilton is gaining a super strong reputation for its robust food scene.

While a lot of the city’s foodie awesomeness is concentrated in the central downtown core in spots like James North or the King William Street Restaurant Row, a lot of locals might be sleeping on the mouth-watering gems just a short drive away in Dundas.

Though with no shortage of established staples like the Collins Brewhouse, Quatrefoil, or The Thirsty Cactus, much of the criminally underrated food scene of Dundas deserves way more love from locals than it typically gets. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of favourites you’ve gotta check out the next time you’re in the area.

Here are some of our favourite Dundas food spots and hidden gems you need to try.

Namu Restaurant

If you haven’t been to Namu before, your taste buds are seriously missing out. Hidden in plain sight in an old converted house at the edge of the quaint Downtown Dundas strip, Namu is known for its exceptional menu of Asian fusion dishes that marry Japanese, Korean, and Chinese cuisines with modern western twists.

On top of inventive sushi rolls and bao sandwiches – a Chinese-inspired steamed bun filled with flavourful toppings – Namu gets extra creative with offerings like the sushi tacos and the gnocchi topped with Korean-style braised short rib. The menu is a bit of a splurge, but oh, it’s worth it. Thank us later.

Red Door Cucina

This primo “if you know, you know” pizza spot is as hidden as it gets; if it weren’t for some sandwich boards placed out on the sidewalk along the main downtown strip indicating Red Door Cucina’s presence down the alley, you may never find the place.

But once you track it down, get ready for a menu of superb, artisan Neapolitan-style pizzas and other authentic Italian comfort food, made out of Red Door’s utilitarian takeaway kitchen with love and loads of saucy, cheesy, doughy goodness.

Chicken parmesan sandwiches, pastas, paninis, and salads round out a menu that’s certain to satisfy any local foodie. No bells and whistles here; just great, modern Italian cuisine.

Betula

A restaurant that bridges the gap between homey casual vibes and intimate fine dining atmosphere, Betula is a favourite among Dundas residents that is otherwise seriously overlooked and underrated.

Serving up a seasonally inspired and chef-driven menu with locally-sourced ingredients, Betula’s menu traverses a number of different cuisines with options like a mountainous, Southern-style fried chicken sandwich, homemade spaghetti & meatballs, chipotle pineapple chicken tacos, and their staple pork schnitzel served with spätzle, sauerkraut, and apples.

With fresh and elevated comfort food, Betula is not to be missed.

Little Asia

This place is the best Thai spot you’ve never heard of, with a twist: the entire menu is made up exclusively of vegetarian and vegan dishes.

With fresh curries, stir fries, and noodle dishes that absolutely burst with flavour and satisfy beyond measure, Little Asia has to be one of the Hamilton area’s best options for Thai cuisine. The reasonably-priced menu is densely packed with enough enticing selection to be overwhelming, demanding repeat visits to this easy-to-miss gem in Downtown Dundas.

Owned and operated by two Laotian refugees and backed with decades of culinary experience, Little Asia is as authentic and delicious as it gets while being ethical and sustainable to boot.

India Village

Local lovers of all things spicy regularly cite India Village as some of the city’s best Indian cuisine.

Fresh and delicious with a comprehensive menu of curries, rice dishes, and other authentic Indian delicacies, India Village has easily become one of the city’s staples for those who aren’t afraid of serious flavour.

With a location in Ancaster on top of its popular one in Downtown Dundas, India Village’s menu of aromatic and comforting delights is built to accommodate anyone from committed carnivores to voracious vegans. Just make sure you wear your stretchiest pants.
