These are the most anticipated food spots opening soon in Hamilton

There’s a severe lack of certainty in 2021; but one thing that’s sure is that Hamilton’s food scene is continuing to grow in endlessly exciting ways.

This year has already seen some tremendous new food spots open their doors – from the fresh Japanese cuisine at Fishing Sushi, to the Southern smoked ‘n fried deliciousness at Lucky’s BBQ, to the rebirth of nose-to-tail restaurant Rapscallion on James North.

Best of all, there’s plenty more where that came from; and with numerous spots already announcing plans to open up shop in 2021, anticipation is high among Hamilton foodies eager to try the latest and greatest in local eats.

Want the lowdown on some of the most hotly anticipated new food spots coming to Hamilton soon? We’ve got you covered.

Matty’s Hot Chicken

This fried chicken venture by HAMBRGR’s Chef Michael Cipollo alongside his young son Matty has already garnered a fevered reputation with locals for its menu of chef-driven fried chicken sandwiches in a number of enticing varieties alongside fries, salads, mac ‘n cheese, and homemade donuts.

A dedicated restaurant space is forthcoming somewhere along Locke Street, but Matty’s Hot Chicken has already taken the city’s food scene by storm while operating as a temporary ghost kitchen exclusively for takeout and delivery on King William Street.

When the full restaurant finally does open its doors at an undetermined date later in 2021, expect it to do so with a resounding bang.

Globally Local

Hamilton’s vegans love their fast food too, and Globally Local – a chain of plant-based fast food joints – will be opening its first Hamilton location across from Lime Ridge Mall.

Serving up veganized renditions of fast food favourites like the McDonald’s Big Mac or Burger King Whopper with no meat or dairy in sight, Globally Local will be joining the ranks of other local vegan spots like The Staircase, The Hearty Hooligan, and Rise Above Pizzeria that prove a plant-based diet can satisfy those junk food cravings too.

Globally Local opens at 920 Upper Wentworth Street this summer, bringing the Hamilton Mountain its first fully vegan food spot.

Momoco Donuts

Between old school spots like Grandad’s Donuts and the more elevated fare at Donut Monster, Hamilton has no shortage of excellent options for the doughy, sweet snack.

Even still, the city is about to get another exciting and singular addition with the forthcoming Momoco Donuts: a sister spot to the beloved Asian bakery MySweeTooth.

Momoco Donuts will be opening soon at 2 Catharine Street North between King Street East and King William Street, and it promises to mix things up a bit with a selection of freshly-baked Asian fusion donuts crafted in unique flavours and styles like matcha or strawberry glazed.

A hard opening date has yet to be set; but the day it comes will be oh-so sweet.

UnDefined

Opening in the spot that most recently held modern Italian spot Frat’s Cucina, UnDefined is poised to be one of King William Street’s most intriguing and inventive restaurants, nestled in between beloved spots like Berkeley North and The French.

Another venture by Chef Michael Cipollo of HAMBRGR and Matty’s Hot Chicken – the latter of which is currently using UnDefined’s facility as a ghost kitchen – this restaurant promises to “take the familiar and turn it into something wild,” teasing a menu loaded with creative takes on classic bites served in a sleek, contemporary setting.

Very few details about the menu or a forthcoming opening date have emerged, but UnDefined already has local foodies buzzing.

FBI Pizza

Traditional and elevated takes on Italian cuisine using the highest quality ingredients are what we can expect at the forthcoming FBI Pizza, which is opening a location in Hamilton to follow up its successful restaurant in Etobicoke.

FBI, which stands for Full-Blooded Italian, specializes in Neapolitan-style pies with classic options like a simple Margherita pizza or something even heartier like the La Porchetta pizza with slow roasted porchetta, sautéed mushrooms, red peppers, and goat cheese.

With topping like D.O.P San Marzano tomato sauce and good olive oil used on each pie, FBI Pizza already promises to become a strong entry into Hamilton’s bustling Italian food scene once a solid location and opening date are revealed. Our stomachs are sooooo ready.

That’s My Jam

Sandwich lovers, rejoice: That’s My Jam is about to become one of Hamilton’s most unique sandwich shops that also puts community engagement and advocacy for local artists at the forefront.

For those who can’t resist a solid sweet & savoury combo, this new King William joint will basically be heaven, with a menu of handmade sandwiches that blend toppings like meat and cheese with a balanced dose of sweetness from fresh fruits, compotes, and house-made sauces.

Examples from the forthcoming menu include a ham & cheese sandwich with pineapple; a pulled pork sandwich with crispy onions and cherry compote; and a marinated chicken sandwich with avocado mash, blistered cherry tomatoes, baby arugula, and house bacon jam.

Though more information on an opening date is still to come, That’s My Jam’s colourful and engaging Instagram presence shows off their playful hip-hop vibes and some seriously drool-worthy shots of their sandwiches. We can’t wait to take our first bites.
