A beloved Chinese restaurant is closing after 40 years in Hamilton

It’s a sad day in Hamilton’s food scene, as one of the city’s longest-standing Chinese restaurants has announced that they are permanently closing their doors.

South Sea Restaurant, which has been a homey and well-loved mainstay on Ottawa Street for 40 full years, announced via their website and social media that the time has come to retire and for the restaurant to bid farewell to the local community it has served for generations.

“After 40 years serving the East Hamilton community and beyond, the time has come for South Sea to retire,” said the restaurant in a statement.

“We extend our utmost gratitude to our loyal customers, many of whom have been with us and supported us since the beginning; it has been the greatest honour and pleasure to cook for all of you.”

Simple, traditional Chinese and Canadian dishes have been a staple at South Sea for its decades of service in Hamilton, and the restaurant will undoubtedly be hugely missed by locals who have relied on South Sea for delicious food for years.

Hamiltonians who want to bid a final farewell to the restaurant’s staff or have special memories of South Sea they want to share are invited to email them at fortyyears@southsea.ca.
