Beloved fried chicken sandwich spot has closed its doors in Hamilton

This one hurts big time.

One of Hamilton’s hidden gems making some of the best fried chicken sandwiches in town has announced that they are permanently closing up shop, effective immediately.

That gem is The Pigeon: a tiny takeaway spot nestled in Mount Hope right by the Hamilton International Airport that was run by culinary industry veterans Chef Matt Beasley and Jenny Ngu.

“We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past three years,” wrote Beasley and Ngu in an announcement post on social media. “We want to focus on the wellbeing of our family and closing the business had to be our first step.”

In its handful of years of operation, The Pigeon had readily become a popular comfort food favourite with Mount Hope locals, but was also a big draw for Hamiltonians who made the extra bit of drive out to get their hands on The Pigeon’s coveted fried chicken sandwiches, fries, salads, and beyond.

Those sandwiches featured buttermilk fried chicken thighs topped harmoniously with a range of ingredients, and variations running the gamut from Indian fusion to Big Mac style and everything in between; all with a perfect ratio of meat to toppings to bun. (Fun fact: their sandwiches were ranked number one on our Top 10 Fried Chicken Sandwiches list this year).

This humble little spot with tremendous comfort dishes will be missed by many a Hamilton food lover, and here’s hoping that Beasley and Ngu won’t be absent from the local food scene for too long.
