Here are 5 great spots for breakfast sandwiches in Hamilton

Breakfast sandwiches are some kind of wonderful.

Whoever came up with the idea of putting nourishing breakfast bites like bacon & eggs, hash browns, and even fresh fruit between buns or bagel slices must’ve been some kind of genius, because there are few things that make us happier than tossing all of the staples of a quality breakfast staple together between bread.

In our hunt for excellent breakfast sandwiches around Hamilton, we found a bunch of noteworthy spots in town offering quality handhelds that help make the morning so, so much better; or at least, tastier.

Though there are plenty of great options in the Hammer, here’s a handful that stood out to us!

Mulberry Coffeehouse

How could we leave out this fixture of the James North strip? Mulberry Coffeehouse has held tight as one of Hamilton’s favourite long-standing cafes, delivering approachable bohemian vibes with a menu of coffee and bites to match.

Their menu of breakfast sandwiches has options for both vegetarians and meat lovers, seeing egg and tomato paired with bacon, sausage, ham, spinach, or avocado on a choice of sourdough bagel or butter croissant. Simple, but oh-so satisfying.

Electric Diner

For elevated diner-style grub and ‘80s vibes straight outta Miami Vice, look no further than Electric Diner in Hess Village.

This spot kicks breakfast up a notch with inventive comfort dishes like grilled cheese Eggs Benny, strawberry cheesecake shortstacks, brunch-ready burgers, and much more.

But their breakfast sandwich also demands attention, loading fresh white bread with a harmonious combo of thick-cut bacon, a broken yolk egg, avocado, American cheese, Boston lettuce, and the diner’s own delicious chipotle ketchup. A little savoury, a little sweet, a lot of delicious.

541 Eatery & Exchange

On top of having great food and gorgeous vibes, 541 Eatery & Exchange is known for its community outreach work in Barton Village and their charitable ‘button system’ which allows customers to purchase buttons that locals experiencing food insecurity can use to redeem for meals.

Their own breakfast sandwich is a notable menu standout, harmoniously marrying a fried egg, cheddar, fresh spinach, and house tomato jam on a fresh buttermilk biscuit. It’s a sizeable portion, and it’s only like $5, or $7 if you add bacon to it. Go grab one, and maybe toss a couple of bucks towards 541’s button program before you head out.

That’s My Jam

One of Hamilton’s newest eateries is this little sandwich shop on King William Street specializing in sandwiches that incorporate fruits in the form of house-made jams, sauces, and chutneys.

That intriguing interplay between savoury toppings and fruity sweetness is very evident on their small menu of breakfast sandwiches, which include a peanut butter & banana sandwich with bacon jam and crispy bacon on twelve-grain bread; a sandwich with fried egg, hash browns, cheddar, and raspberry jam on rosemary focaccia; and a breakfast wrap with scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese, roasted mushrooms, and blueberry compote.

Saint James Espresso Bar & Eatery

This cozy brunch spot and coffee bar on James North is small but mighty, consistently churning out some of the best espresso drinks and elevated breakfast bites in Hamilton.

On top of tartines, breakfast platters, salads, pancakes, and more, the Saint James is also famous for their lineup of breakfast sandwiches including the famous Drive-Thru, which loads an English muffin with a sausage patty, fried egg, American cheese, a thick ‘n greasy house-made hash brown, and some house chilli mayo to finish it off. It’s almost too good.
