One door closes, and another opens: though Hamilton’s Mustard Seed Co-op came to a tumultuous end and announced its permanent closure, a different grocer with an emphasis on locally sourced products will be taking its place.
It’s a new project courtesy of Dundurn Market, one of the city’s existing boutique grocers specializing in locally-grown produce, hot meals made in-house, and other food products made by the city’s best purveyors and artisans.
Dundurn Market has taken over Mustard Seed’s space at 460 York Boulevard with plans to create a new local food hub, expanding the market’s physical capacity to support local farmers and food providers.
As someone who went to the Mustard Seed every week, I really like where this is headed. The fact that it will allow the @dundurnmarket and Ottawa Market to "work with double the amount of farmers in the coming year" is great news. #HamOnt https://t.co/Ka1dQtACyx

“With support from the original founders and members, this new venture will aim to provide the surrounding neighborhoods with access to fresh, local foods while allowing us to expand the number of products we carry and provide more room for our growing online business,” reads a message from Dundurn Market on social media.
An anticipated opening date for Dundurn Market’s venture has yet to be announced, though the market says that a number of original members from Mustard Seed are already backing the project.
It’s exciting news for Hamilton, as a city with very few independent grocers dedicated primarily to providing local foods on their shelves.
Here’s hoping the wait isn’t too long for this exciting new venture!
