14th annual Hamilton Film Festival kicks off with a comedy-themed line-up

If Fall’s seasonal gloom has you feeling a little more down than usual, the Hamilton Film Festival may have the ideal antidote as they debut a funny-forward line up of films for their 14th season.

The Hamilton Film Festival, our city’s largest and longest-running film event showcasing some of the world’s most exciting new filmmaking, has been operating the last couple of years with an overall festival theme. With previous themes including ‘Music’ and ‘Darkness’, this year’s theme of ‘Comedy: Happy Stuff!’ has a little more lightness in mind.

In fact, this year’s Hamilton Film Festival 120-film line-up kicks off with a bang on Saturday November 2nd at 8 pm with an evening of comedy headlined by Darrin Rose (of Match Game fame) at the recently-renovated Westdale Theatre.

The evening will feature stand-up comedy by Rose and local comic Brenda Lennie, followed by a line-up of comedic short films – including one directed by Rose himself that stars K. Trevor Wilson of Letterkenny fame – to get the festival going in hilarious fashion.

That’s not to say there won’t be a solidly diverse mix of films and genres on offer at this year’s festival. At various screening locations including the Westdale Theatre, Staircase Theatre, Playhouse Cinema, and The Zoetic, the festival will also be presenting a host of short and feature length dramas and documentaries if you need a break from belly-laughing.

To keep things local, the Hamilton Film Festival is also proudly presenting 50 films by local filmmakers to honour the festival’s Hammer roots, including works created by Juno Rinaldi (CBC’s Workin’ Moms), Anne Bradley, Cyrus Baetz, and Calvin Keo.

With a jam-packed program of the latest and greatest in filmmaking, and a healthy dose of Hamilton representation, there’s no doubt that the 14th annual Hamilton Film Festival is poised to be a can’t-miss event for local lovers of all things film.

The Hamilton Film Festival kicks off on Saturday November 2nd and runs to Saturday November 9th. For a complete schedule of films and industry events, as well as ticket and venue information, visit the Hamilton Film Festival’s website.
