VIDEO: Arkells surprise Hamilton fan with a performance on her front lawn

If you need your daily dose of the feels, this just might do the trick.
Max Kerman, frontman of the wildly popular Hamilton band Arkells, posted a video to YouTube yesterday in which he surprises a Hamilton fan with an acoustic serenade on her front lawn and pays tribute to the 2020 graduating class at McMaster University; the very place the band originally met.
That fan is Ava Harrison, a McMaster student graduating this year who, like her fellow grads, has to celebrate her academic accomplishments in a more muted way amid COVID-19.
“We feel especially bummed for all the hardworking college students who don’t get the chance to properly celebrate with their family and friends,” says Kerman in the video.
He then explains that the band reached out to McMaster for help to track down a notable graduating student who also happens to be an Arkells fan, with plans to surprise that fan with a special performance.

When the band was pointed to Harrison, Kerman made arrangements with the Mac grad’s family to set up the surprise under the guise of a housebound graduation photoshoot. Harrison got dressed up for the occasion and donned a graduation gown, completely unsuspecting.
Then, at the agreed-upon time, Harrison’s family led her out to the front porch where she was stunned to find Kerman and his neighbour standing on the lawn, guitars in hand and at a safe distance. Wishing Harrison and the rest of the McMaster University Class of 2020 a happy graduation, Kerman then played an acoustic rendition of Arkells’ recent hit single Years in the Making; a optimistic, bouncy rock anthem that’s, fittingly, all about the rewards of hard work.

Arkells have been a notably positive local presence during these uncertain times, with moving gestures like this special serenade on top of community initiatives like hosting music lessons on Instagram Live, where the band teaches homebound musicians how to play some of their most popular songs.
