VIDEO: Hamilton theatre companies raise their voices in harmony during COVID-19

During these distressing times, it seems that people feel the need to turn to art for comfort, solace, and connection more than ever.

That said, the arts & culture industry has taken a major hit during COVID-19. Every theatre, concert hall, movie house, film set, and live performance venue is closed indefinitely, leaving the public with no place to gather and share a communal experience. And let’s be real: we’re all getting a little bored of Netflix.

Hamilton’s own arts community is finding creative ways of responding to this new – albeit less than ideal – normal, by shifting their work to digital platforms as a means of sharing art and connecting people at a distance. It may not be perfect, but it’s what we’ve got for now.

In that spirit, a collective of Hamilton’s theatre companies and associated artists seized this opportunity to raise their voices in harmony remotely, with dozens of the city’s singers and actors coming together in harmony to tackle the song ‘Do You Hear the People Sing,” an anthemic showstopper from the hit Broadway musical Les Miserables.

The video features artists of all ages associated with theatre companies in Hamilton and the surrounding area including Theatre Ancaster, The Players’ Guild of Hamilton, Drury Lane Theatre, Hamilton Theatre Inc, Burk-Oak Theatre Group, Clarkson Music Theatre, Guelph Little Theatre, Brampton Musical Theatre, Georgetown Globe Productions, and more.

The performance is a moving gesture during troubled times, and a reminder of the talent on Hamilton’s stages that can’t wait to share a room with the community again someday soon.
