Hamilton’s Playhouse Cinema has started home-streaming films during COVID-19

With the realities of COVID-19 indicating that public event spaces like theatres, concert halls, and other venues will likely remain shuttered for months to come, many staples of Hamilton’s arts & culture identity are finding innovative ways to pivot their business until it is once again safe for groups to gather and share an experience together.
One such example is the Playhouse Cinema, the east end’s gorgeously restored independent film house that has seen operations completely halt amid this global health crisis.
A popular spot for local lovers of indie cinema, the Playhouse has now introduced an initiative called Playhouse at Home, which allows film buffs to stream the latest and greatest in independent film from the comfort of their homes; feature films that the Playhouse would have otherwise been screening at their venue.
The films are being offered to Hamiltonians under a ‘pay-what-you-can’ model, meaning that movie lovers can pay whatever price they wish. The Playhouse suggests paying $8 for the virtual ticket, but locals can pay less or more than this recommended price if they choose.
The current films on offer for home-streaming are The Bookseller, Fantastic Fungi, This is Not a Movie, and Best of the CatVideoFest. More films will become available in the near future.
This temporary model is a great way of supporting one of Hamilton’s independent businesses; one of countless in the city who are facing financial precarity as a result of the pandemic.
In purchasing a virtual ticket and watching these films at home, locals won’t just get to enjoy fantastic movies at home; they’ll also be helping to ensure that the Playhouse Cinema will be able to reopen its doors on the other side of this crisis.
