This critically acclaimed new movie was shot – and set – in Hamilton

It’s no secret that Hamilton is a hotspot for the film & television industry. Countless projects have been shot on our streets: everything from Oscar-winning features to Netflix original series.
However, of all of the movies filmed in Hamilton, how many have you seen that are actually set right here in the city as part of the main story?
Well, a brand new, critically acclaimed psychological thriller has just been released for streaming through video on demand that, on top of being filmed all over Hamilton, also takes place here.

White Lie, a 2019 independent film directed by Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas, tells the story of Katie Arneson, a McMaster University student in the midst of a massive public con in which she’s been faking a cancer diagnosis for both financial and emotional gain. However, the stakes get dangerously higher as Katie’s web of lies continues to get more and more unruly.
Hamiltonians will catch a countless number of prominent local landmarks, references, and familiar brands, including Mohawk College, View Magazine, the HSR, the Gibson neighbourhood, and stretches of Burlington Street in the city’s North End.
The intense, riveting film – which features a smart & taut script as well as a complex and lived-in lead performance by Canadian actress Kacey Rohl – was a huge hit at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and was cited on multiple year-end Top 10 lists.
While the film was likely slated for some form of cinematic release sometime in 2020, the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic have instead pushed the film directly onto streaming platforms and video on demand.
