Hamilton-born Eugene Levy wins Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Hamilton-born actor and comedian Eugene Levy won one of the big awards at the Emmy Awards last night, walking away with the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the popular CBC television series Schitt’s Creek.

The Canadian production created by Levy and his son Daniel Levy cleaned up at the awards on Sunday and made Emmy Awards history.

Schitt’s Creek took home seven awards on Sunday, breaking the record for the most wins for a television comedy in one season.

The awards included a sweep of the acting categories, with Levy’s win for Outstanding Lead, Catherine O’Hara for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Daniel Levy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Annie Murphy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show itself also won for Best Comedy Series.

This is an Emmy first with one show sweeping each of the comedy categories, beating out notable past juggernauts like Frasier and Modern Family

Schitt’s Creek has seen a massive uptick in international popularity during its latter seasons. The series follows a rich family who had their fortune taken away and were forced to move to a small town that is owned by the Levy character.

Recent spikes in COVID-19 unfortunately dampened the celebrations from those working on the comedy. Levy said that the cast had planned a larger party, but had to reduce its numbers after the recent outbreaks. The party took place at Casa Loma in Toronto.

It has been a year of successes for Levy with him also receiving a lifetime achievement award earlier in 2020.
