If you’ve passed through Hamilton’s International Village in the last few days, you probably noticed it looks pretty different, with plenty of new and unusual storefronts lining the strip.
No, it’s not because a bunch of businesses have rebranded; it’s because Disney is shooting a new movie on location right here in the city and has transformed the International Village into a strip of the Astoria neighbourhood in Queen’s, New York.
The movie, called Sneakerella, is a new pop and hip-hop movie musical about sneaker culture that is set to debut on the production company’s new streaming platform, Disney+, sometime in 2021.
Starring actors Chosen Jacobs (IT), Lexi Underwood (Little Fires Everywhere), and NBA champion John Salley, the movie will be a modernized, street-savvy take on the classic Cinderella story; one which Disney has notably adapted more than once in the past.
“Sneakerella brings a vibrant, modern approach to a beloved story by suggesting that magic is the result of hard work and determination and exists within each of us,” reads a statement from Lauren Kisilevsky, Vice President of Original Movies for the Disney Channel.
It will certainly be exciting to try to catch familiar Hamilton locales on screen once Sneakerella drops on Disney+ in 2021!
