Documentary on Hamilton band Teenage Head airs on TVO tonight

Legendary Hamilton band Teenage Head will be featured in a documentary that’s scheduled to be broadcast and available online on November 3rd.

Picture My Face: The Story of Teenage Head tells the history of the punk band that is determined to re-enter the limelight after 40 years.

The film was written and produced by award-winning filmmaker Douglas Arrowsmith, and executive produced by Karen Melvin and TVO.

“It is difficult to describe the 1970’s excitement over Teenage Head. Back in the day, I remember crowding into dark bars to listen to the band shake it up. And being from Hamilton myself, it was especially sweet to see one of our own in the limelight, ready, and on the verge of going big,” shared Jane Jankovic, Executive Producer of Documentaries at TVO.

“The band didn’t break through in that way. But what remains is a powerful story that celebrates music, friendship, and the powerful bonds that tie for a lifetime.”

Teenage Head was one of the most popular punk bands to come out of Hamilton during the initial boom of the movement in the 1970s.

The documentary looks closer at how the band started as conversations in the back of an English class and led to concerts that caused riots at Toronto’s Ontario Place.

Their band quickly launched them to worldwide success with two gold albums and a chance to break widely in the United States. Then, a series of setbacks changed the band’s future forever.

Told through a present-day narrative of bassist Steve Mahon and lead guitarist Gord Lewis, who struggles to overcome depression after the loss of lead singer Frankie “Venom” Kerr.

With appearances from Marky Ramone, Rob Barker of the Tragically Hip, and Nina Antonia of the New York Dolls, the film tells the story of one of Hamilton’s most legendary bands through exclusive and never-before-seen footage of Teenage Head.

Picture My Face: The Story of Teenage Head premieres on TVO on November 3rd at 9 pm and rebroadcast on Saturday and Sunday. It will also be available for streaming on tvo.org and the TVO YouTube channel.
